MTN Ghana has reiterated its commitment to developing the Ghanaian app industry through the MTN Apps Challenge to catch up with the rest of the world in growing its economy through digital projects. According to the company, plans are far advanced to partner with key industry experts to commercialise viable local apps borne out of Apps Challenge projects through a strategic initiative called Katapult. Details of the initiative will be made available to developers in the country in the coming months this year.
Speaking at the just ended MTN Apps Challenge Version 4.0 Award ceremony held in Accra, the Chief Marketing Officer of MTN Ghana, Asher Khan, noted that the MTN Apps Challenge forms part of MTN Group’s aim to grow the app developer community in Africa and increase the content of viable local apps across its footprint.
He acknowledged how viable local app developers are changing the world in the area of content development, marketing , automation and countless other purpose hence the need for upcoming local developers to be to innovative and creative in coming out with friendly projects that will satisfy the needs of consumers.
“On our part, MTN will continue to make investments in line with the ongoing technological transformation. Our MTN Play platform remains open for local content developers and we can work together to make your innovations accessible to users,” he stated.
The MTN App Challenge Version 4.0 which had an added two new categories namely Animation and Internet of Things (IoT) to the existing categories including Business, Entertainment, Games, Sports and Lifestyle witnessed the awards of new, exciting and innovative Apps like Agorkoli, Octobian, the Bird& Kite, Sky High, Do IT Right and Monuments all Animation Freelance/Tertiary category. Amatsi, Misika,NanTis emerged winners in the Business Category. Under the Education category apps including TestTube, Pasco and Afromosie were adjudged winners. Game/ Entertainment category saw Youplay, Counters Ball Pro and Alikoto taking the top position in the competition, while the Lifestyle category boast of AF Radio, Kloseup and gamesWap as it winners.
Creative apps like Scarecrow, Alikoto and Yennkase were recognized as the MTN Apps Challenge Special Awards.
The Senior High School (SHS) Awards category aimed at encouraging students in the country’s second cycle institutions to be interested in app development also had Presbyterian Boys Senior High School’s Red Button app as winner, with Keta Senior High School with School Profile app and Accra Academy Senior High School Sunu the Jumper app following as first and second runners up respectively.
