2. KNUST Opens a Cutting-Edge Optics Lab — And Invites the Continent In

KNUST’s Department of Physics has launched the Ghana Photonics and Optics Laboratory (GPOL), a facility dedicated to building light-based scientific instruments, and marked the occasion by hosting the inaugural NYANSAPO Photonics School. The event drew 38 emerging scientists from six African countries and 17 international researchers, with backing from global optics societies SPIE and Optica. 3. A Hospital Ship Returns to Ghana’s Waters for a 10-Month Surgical Mission

The Ghana Health Service has renewed its long-running partnership with Mercy Ships, the international charity that operates floating hospitals, building on more than three decades of collaboration that began in 1991. Over a planned 10-month mission, the initiative is expected to deliver between roughly 1,950 and 2,600 free surgeries and up to 2,145 dental treatments, while training somewhere between 100 and 250 Ghanaian healthcare workers through mentorship and hands-on clinical experience. The partnership is designed to complement Ghana’s Free Primary Health Care programme, which is expected to identify more patients who need specialist surgical care as it expands. It also supports the country’s National Surgical, Obstetric, and Anaesthesia Plan, a long-term strategy for improving access to surgery nationwide.

4. New Study Maps the Toll of Motorcycle Accidents on Ghana’s Bones

A multi-center study led by Philip Narteh Gorleku and colleagues has put hard numbers on a problem emergency rooms across Ghana see constantly: bone injuries from motorcycle accidents. Reviewing X-ray reports for 1,736 patients treated between January 2020 and December 2023, the researchers found that 82.9% of motorcycle-accident patients had a traumatic bone injury, and 10.3% of those patients died. The tibia/fibula (the two lower-leg bones), the femur (thigh bone), and the skull were the most commonly fractured, while dislocations clustered at the ankle, shoulder, and elbow. Passengers — not the riders themselves — bore the brunt of the most severe injuries, sustaining more skull and spine fractures than drivers, and patients with spine or skull injuries had strikingly high mortality rates of 85.3% and 65.0% respectively. The authors point to a worsening annual trend and call for stronger emergency trauma systems, including faster triage and imaging, alongside motorcycle safety policies to prevent these injuries in the first place.
Why it matters: With motorcycle use rising across Ghana, this kind of data-driven picture of exactly which injuries are killing people — and who is most at risk — gives hospitals and policymakers something concrete to design better trauma care and road-safety rules around, rather than guessing.
5. University Students Learn to Turn Farms Into Full-Blown Businesses

KNUST’s Nutrition and Sustainable Agri-food Collaborative, working with the Mastercard Foundation, has kicked off the second cohort of its Tertiary Entrepreneurship Training (TET) in Agribusiness — a 10-day programme now training 100 tertiary students. Rather than teaching students to simply farm, the course reframes agriculture as what organisers call a “broad entrepreneurial ecosystem,” spanning production, processing, marketing, technology, and consumption. 6. Sixty Teenage Girls Just Built Flood Sensors, Smart Bins, and a CO2 Monitor

The Molex Foundation Africa’s SHEROES in STEM Bootcamp wrapped its third cohort this week, and the results are the kind of story that makes this round-up worth writing. Sixty senior high school girls, mostly from Ghana’s Central Region, spent two weeks learning robotics, artificial intelligence, 3D modelling, and 3D printing — then used those skills to build real prototypes. The 2026 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) — Ghana’s flagship televised competition testing secondary school students on science, math, and general knowledge — crowned Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (PRESEC-Legon) champion at its grand finale on September 10, in a nail-biter against Accra Academy and St Augustine’s College. PRESEC trailed by 9 points after the opening round, but clawed back through the competition’s tougher “Problem of the Day” round and held its nerve through to the end, finishing on 40 points against Accra Academy’s 33 and St Augustine’s 27. The win is PRESEC’s ninth NSMQ trophy overall, making it the most successful school in the quiz’s history, and commentators couldn’t resist the storyline: a team that started 9 points behind ended the day with its 9th title.

8. Eleven Ghanaian Universities Are Baking Tech Certifications Directly Into Degrees
