The Kratchi West District in the Volta Region is set to venture into the production of basic medicines by the middle of 2018 to augment its medicine supplies. The hospital has already constructed a production house while it continues steps to secure equipment needed to commence production.

The project is been financed by the hospitals Internally generated funds and the Korea Foundation for International Health. The Pharmacy department of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and Pharmanova, a pharmaceutical company are also collaborating on the project.

The medical superintendant of the hospital, Dr. Hilarious Abiwu stated in an interview that the aim to commence production of basic medicines is part of efforts to reduce expenditure on basic medicines. He noted that the skilled personnel trained in drug production were already available and as such with the right equipment production of basic medicines was within the reach of the hospital.

Meanwhile, the hospital has rolled out a programme to rehabilitate and expand other facilities. So far the hospital has refurbished its Maternity Block and completed an abandoned administration block. Additionally, it is constructing a 50-bed capacity children’s ward, a conference facility and a skills laboratory. This is to augment the training of students at the Krachi Nursing and Midwifery School.

The hospital has a catchment area which serves four districts including Krachi Nchumuru, Kratchi East, Kpandai and Sene East.
