Today’s black history month feature is TReND, an organisation on a mission to shift the scales from brain drain to brain gain in sub-Sahara Africa. TReND which stands for ‘Teaching and Research in (Neuro)science for Development’ started operations in 2010 to help improve science education at the tertiary level with a focus on neuroscience.
TReND has a presence in about 15 countries including Ghana. In the quest to fulfil their mission the organisation organises various summer schools, workshops and outreach programs to educate and entice students and pupils into neuroscience. TReND – Ghana recently organised an ‘Introducing neuroscience to Ghana’ outreach program with primary, secondary and tertiary schools to improve the pupils and students understanding of the brain and how it works. Their model also adopts the use of low cost approaches whiles maximising reach and impact. With continued outreach programs like this, pupils will go from handling brain models to working on the human brain.
